Discover Your Life Beyond the Itinerary

Life Beyond the Itinerary is about more than travel. It is about what happens when the plans change, the schedule loosens, and you finally have the freedom to see where life takes you.

For most of my adult life, structure was a constant. I spent years in the United States Air Force, first enlisted and later as an officer, eventually retiring as a Major. After that came another chapter in the private sector, working in business development, technology, and federal contracting. Between career, family, responsibilities, and everything that comes with building a life, there was always another meeting, another deadline, another objective, another place I was supposed to be.

Retirement changed that.

It gave my wife, Janice, and me the opportunity to ask a different question: What do we want life to look like now

For us, the answer was not to stop. It was to explore.

Our current chapter begins in Panama, where we are establishing residency, learning how to live in a new country, and building a new home base from which we can continue traveling. But this story did not begin in Panama, and it certainly will not end here.

Travel has been part of our lives for years. We have experienced places such as France, England, Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Mexico, and Vietnam. My military service also took me to places including Bahrain, Turkey, and Qatar, where travel had a very different meaning. Some destinations were vacations. Some were assignments. Some were places I never imagined I would see. Each one gave me a different view of the world and, in many ways, of myself.

That is part of what I want to capture here.

This blog will look forward, but it will also look back.

I want to revisit some of those earlier journeys through old photographs, memories, and the perspective that comes from having more years behind me now. I want to remember what surprised me, what challenged me, what I misunderstood at the time, and what those places taught me.

At the same time, Life Beyond the Itinerary will document what is happening now.

That means sharing the beautiful parts of living abroad, but also the practical realities that often get left out of travel stories: finding a place to live, navigating residency, transporting our dogs internationally, opening bank accounts, grocery shopping, healthcare, transportation, learning a new culture, dealing with unexpected expenses, and figuring things out as we go.

There will be beaches and sunsets, but there will also be receipts, wrong turns, language struggles, long travel days, great conversations, unexpected kindness, frustrations, discoveries, and probably more than a few moments when the original plan goes completely out the window.

Those moments are often the ones worth remembering.

I also want this to be a place where I can talk openly about retirement itself.

For me, retirement does not mean withdrawing from life. It means having more control over how I spend my time. It means being able to wake up in a new place, walk through a neighborhood I have never seen before, sit down with someone whose life looks completely different from mine, or spend a quiet afternoon doing absolutely nothing without feeling like I should be somewhere else.

After decades of living around schedules and responsibilities, that kind of freedom feels significant.

You will also see some practical discussion here about the cost of living, housing, real estate, food, transportation, travel logistics, and the realities of building a life outside the United States. I am naturally curious about how places work, what things cost, why neighborhoods develop the way they do, and what makes one location feel livable while another does not.

But this is not meant to be a travel guide in the traditional sense.

I am not here to tell anyone that there is one right way to retire, one perfect country to move to, or one list of places everyone needs to see.

This is simply our experience.

What worked. What did not. What surprised us. What we learned. What we would do differently. And what happened when we stopped trying to control every part of the journey.

That is really what the name means to me.

Life Beyond the Itinerary is the part that happens between the reservations, beyond the tour schedules, outside the plans, and after the expectations.

It is the conversation with someone you did not expect to meet.

The neighborhood you wandered into by accident.

The meal you ordered without really knowing what you were getting.

The place that looked ordinary on a map but became unforgettable once you were there.

And sometimes, it is the decision to completely change direction.

Panama is where this next chapter begins.

From here, Janice and I plan to continue exploring, learning, traveling, and seeing where the road leads. Along the way, I will share both the journey ahead and some of the journeys that brought us here.

Because after spending much of life following the itinerary, I am beginning to think the most interesting part may be everything that happens beyond it.
